Lots of changes are happening here in Guatemala

In case you have not heard, Guatemala now has a new president by the name of Alvaro Colom.  It is believed that he is a Mayan priest though he does not appear to be of Mayan decent.  He was part of the guerrilla movement in the past civil war and the opponent, Otto Perez, was part of the government forces and is alleged to have taken part in the killing of a Catholic priest during the civil war.  This was very noticable in the election results since Colom won the country side while Perez won the city and populated areas.

There is a lot of construction going on around the school now.  We used to be more rural with a few developments around us.  Now however, we are being encroached on all sides.  A new private school is under construction next door, a strip mall is being built on the other side and across the street is a large condominium development underway.  Up the road are several more condo developments happening in various stages of completion.  There has also been significant work on the local roads with the road from the main street into the school area under construction since the summer with no end in sight!  The highway to the Atlantic is under construction as well going from a potholed two lane road to a concrete four lane road, at least for the first few miles out of the city.
