To answer any questions, the school is NOT closing, there was talk of a possible closure for a few days ONLY!
There has been an increase recently in violence and shootings.
While Guatemala is not "safe" to start with, generally we can go about our daily affairs without too much worry. That may be changing. There have been a number of shootings recently of bus drivers who have either been unwilling or unable to pay the "protection money" to gangs. Today there have been both targeted and random bus shootings attributed to gang activity rather than the usual robbery gone bad. Fortunately this has been in areas of the city away from where we live and where the school is. There is talk about instituting martial law or other measures to control this situation. This would likely not be well received due to the recent civil war and the killing that was attributed to the army at that time.
We have heard that some of the other schools in the city which we play against in extra-mural sports will be closed due to this uptick in violence. Those schools are located on the opposite side of the city. There is a chance that CAG may also close because of this, especially if the violence makes it's way towards this side of the city.
Pray that the government will take the necessary measures to take control of this situation and restore calm and security while respecting the rights of the people.
