January 2010

As you may have read in the December newsletter, we are actively looking at possibilities for service in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Charles will be going to Sierra Leone for the month of February to “scout out” the work there.  For the first couple of weeks he will be working with another fellow getting things ready for the well drilling team as well as getting a “feel” for what life might be like in Sierra Leone.  Charles also hopes to meet with folks who are currently serving as missionaries in Sierra Leone to get a good understanding of how things work there.  In about the third week of February the remainder of the well drilling team will arrive and Charles and the team will head to the Mokanji Hospital to drill the first well with the newly arrived well drilling truck.  They will not be drilling a well as you might think with a rotary bit but rather what is known as “cable percussion” drilling.  This will seem as very “old school” but it is inexpensive to do and doesn’t need a lot of complicated machinery or tools.  When working in the developing world it is always a good thing when the method is simple and easy to understand and the equipment is not complicated to use or repair.  The goal as always is to work ourselves out of a job and have nationals do the work at some point in the future.

After Charles has returned from Sierra Leone, we will set up dates to inform you about the need in Sierra Leone.  Meanwhile Petra is upgrading her education and enjoying her work as an “on call” casual care aid at the local Seniors' home.

Please pray with us for travel mercies for Charles, strength for Petra and joy as we are able to spend time together with three of our children.  Thank also for your continued financial support.
