June 2007

Here is a quick update on what has happened during this last month: - Charles received a hip replacement on May 29, 2007. The surgery was performed in Canada. He is still recovering at his parents' home. Pray for a complete recuperation. Charles hopes to be able to return to Guatemala in mid to late July. - James, who has obtained his B.C. learners' license previously, is getting a lot of driving experience even here in Guatemala. He drives his mom to the market, to the bank and even to church! He's already driven in four different countries! - Jonathan's best friend Charlie left with his mom to North Carolina at the beginning of June. Please pray for Jonathan that he finds a "new" best friend. Currently he is busily reading a book series, which seems to be his passion at this time. - Petra is serving twice weekly at a clinic and on two other days per week at a Nutrition/Health Centre in one of the rural villages near Sumpango. - At the clinic she is assisting a doctor with care of the patients. Seeing that 90% of those are female patients who don't feel comfortable to being examined by a male doctor, Petra is a relieving presence for them. Since the doctor speaks Spanish as well as Cakchiquel (a Mayan language), Petra is even learning some phrases in that native language, not to mention hands-on nursing knowledge! At the Nutrition Centre, she is working under the auspices of Mano-con-Mano Guatemala. Her responsibilities are manifold and include: Nutrition Program Support - Help with hand washing and seating of children - Help dispense vitamins to children and mothers - Help serve meals to recipients, and encourage mothers and children in healthy eating practices - Report any problems that are observed to the Nutrition Program Director, Medical director or Field Director(s) - Help teach healthy food handling practices to cooking staff - Help supervise and train children. Health Center Support - Assist medical director in performing physical evaluations on children and mothers - Assist in making home visits for patient care or Nutrition Program enrollment - Assistance in Prenatal Program as needed We desire your prayers more than ever and are honored to count you amongst our partners in ministry. God bless, Charles & Petra Wirrell willing and able to spread the Lord’s love by nurturing Missionary Kids at Christian Academy of Guatemala as well as serving the under-served of Guatemala Call us at: (604) 357-3765
