November 2005

Greetings from the Highlands of Guatemala to the Rest of the World,

Can you believe it? One quarter of a school year is already passed!
Within these three months many things have occurred within our lives, within our family, within our world.

Besides filling the role as Maintenance director, Charles teaches three different level of auto shop class on four different days. He and his students dismantle an old car and rebuild it again in such a way that it is road worthy.

Petra teaches German, twice a week. She also administers medication to a grade four student each morning. Twice weekly after school classes, Petra serves at a close-by walk-in clinic by assisting the doctor, by talking with and listening to patients, as well as praying for the patients.

Marta, our eldest, lives now in Cranbrook, BC, and works for the Ministry of Forestry in the interior of British Columbia.

Keith, our oldest son, attends Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is majoring in International Business.

As far as James and Jonathan are concerned, I let them personally tell about their lives. (A bit of bribery – pizza – worked wonders in this case).

“Hey everyone,

This is Johnny one of the MK’s you’re supporting in Guatemala. I am not only writing this letter to tell you about me teacher Mr. Wood, but also for my dinner (pizza). So, now you’re all probably asking yourself, “What’s with ‘Woody’?” Well, Mr. Wood teaches English and U.S. history. He’s a good teacher, and entertaining. Not like my other teacher, Mr. Miller, who’s so boring that one of my friends, Carlos, fell asleep in the middle of one of Mr. Miller’s hour and a half long Bible lectures. But that’s off topic. Back to Wood now. Tomorrow 10-31-05 we are going to watch the movie “The lost skeleton of Cadavra”. If any of you have seen it, you’ll know how funny it is. Well, that’s all folks! (Now, to get my food.)”

James writes:
“School has been in for 2 months now and I am right back in the swing of things. Over the last two months I have played on our Junior Varsity basketball team and I have just finished soccer tryouts. Even after about three months of being on the road I slipped right back into the old routine here at C.A.G. After the recent hurricanes Guatemala needed lots of help and still does. We are doing relief work as a student body in the capital, Guatemala City. The relief work includes working at soup kitchens and digging houses out of mudslides. Even though it has not been a regular start to the school year, it has been a good one.”

Dios le bendiga,
